In 1999, it was felt that our locality needed effective Eye Treatment/Care facilities at reasonable rates for patients of the lower and middle income group and free treatment for the needy and underprivileged. On the initiative of the then District Governor (1999- 2000) Shekhar Mehta of Rotary International District-3290, and under the leadership of the then President (1998-2000) Hira Lal Yadav of Rotary Club of Hooghly, members of Rotary Club of Hooghly proposed to established an Eye Hospital to provide Eye Care/Treatment to the needy and underprivileged. Rotary Club of Hooghly accepted the challenge in spite of severe manpower and financial constraints. In the course of journey, Rtn. Dr. Samar Das of Rotary Club of Guildford, UK and Rtn. Binod Khaitan of Rotary Club of Central Calcutta joined the planning process and proper implementation of the project. A building was acquired at Bansberia, Hooghly on rent. The building was renovated, necessary Equipment was purchased through Grants of TRF and installed. The Hospital was inaugurated on 17 June, 2000. Since then, Rotary Hooghly Eye Hospital (RHEH) is providing Eye Care/Treatment to the needy and underprivileged free of cost and at very reasonable rates to the other patients. RHEH is constantly trying to improve the quality of services as well as reach out to needier, visually impaired patients. Today, Rotary Hooghly Eye Hospital has built up a reputation in and around district Hooghly for its caring and quality services. Free cataract screening camps with pre-operative check-ups are organized and IOL (cataract) surgeries are performed free of cost for the underprivileged patients. Free Eye check-ups for school children in the primary schools are regularly organized and treatment provided to them. The demand for service has over the years increased considerably. To meet the need of the community, the capacity of services need to be expanded. For this, Late Kartick Chandra Ahir donated a land at a more convenient location. A more spacious building of approximately 16,800 sqft floor areas was constructed at the cost of Rs. 198.00 lakhs. Now, we can treat 50,000 patients in out-door and do 9000-10000 surgeries every year. We are privileged to be partnered with Aravind Eye Hospital- Madurai and signed a MOU for Capacity Building and Quality Eye Care Delivery. In this noble cause, support of like-minded people is sought. The Rotarians of Rotary Club of Hooghly and Trustees of Rotary Club of Hooghly Welfare Trust assure for proper implementation of the unique project. The joint effort will bring a difference in the life of so many visually impaired and blind needy patients. The Trustees of Rotary Club of Hooghly Welfare Trust, acknowledge with gratitude all those supporting this noble project.
